Passport to Art Day 13

Here on this blog I am going to share how I made the page for today's prompt.  The inspiration for today is the Poem 'Journey of the Magi' by T S Eliot and the technique challenge is to make your own crown stamp.

This is today's page in my altered book.

I put a piece of masking tape onto the page and then covered the whole page with gesso.  I sprayed blue Dylusions ink on the page and then the White Linen through an Artists Cellar map stencil as I wanted the page to look cold.  I used the snowflake stencil and sprayed more White Linen.

I turned the stencil over to dab off all the ink.

There wasn't much colour on the page to react with the white so the snowflakes are quite subtle.

I sprayed the blue ink through the stencil onto the tag but I sprayed too much and it ran.

I made a stamp from some thin foam which I stuck to a piece of card.

I stamped the crowns, cut up the verse and the quote and stuck them on.  To tone down the tag I sprayed it with the White Linen and then did my journaling on the back.   I stuck a crown embellishment onto the page with foam squares so that I could tuck the tag behind it.

Alcohol Dripping

And no I don't mean vodka or red wine!

This technique uses Rubbing Alcohol which is Surgical Spirit in the UK.   This is the technique Challenge for July on 12 Months in View.

I watched the videos and then tried out both media.  I'll start with the spray inks and the alcohol.

Firstly I cover a piece of paper with gesso and then sprayed the inks.  I tried 2 colours of Dylusions and one of Colorwash.   I was disappointed with the results but wondered if it was the quality of gesso I used.


I tried using a better quality gesso.

Not a lot of difference.  In fact the inks reacted with the gesso on their own.

The first page eventually looked like this

and I'm pretty sure I could have got the same look using water rather than surgical spirit!

With the acrylic paints I started with Golden paints but because I have deliberately chosen the most transparent colours the technique didn't work so I used the Ranger Dabbers.  I still didn't get quite the result the guy gets on the video so I suspect it would be better to use Artist Acrylics rather than dabbers!

I painted the paper orange and when that was dry put the green over it and dripped the surgical spirit onto it with a pipette.

When this was dry I add the next colour and repeated the actions several times.

I wasn't enthralled by this so I thought I would try a different colour combination.

So I left all these papers overnight to see what I thought of them and whether I liked them any better.

Well, not really.  However I continued by adding some black and some white acrylic paint.

I took the one on the left and cut it down to fit in my journal.  I randomly stamped on the page with two Dylusions background stamps and then scraped modelling paste through the matching stencils.

I'm much happier with it now and I may come back and write on it, but for now I'm going to stick it my journal as a technique sample.

Passport to Art Day 12

Here on this blog I am going to share how I made the page for today's prompt.  Today's inspiration is Mary and her response to the shepherds and the wise men.  The technique challenge is a bleachout technique with acrylic paint.

This is today's page with the masking tape on ready.

I painted acrylic paint over the page but ended up with a colour I didn't really like.

However I continued.  I put a 12"x12" stencil over the top and sprayed it with water.

When I dried the page with paper towel and then tried to remove some more of the paint as described in the video, it just moved all the paint arround again.

I put the stencil back on and used the other technique of taking the paint off with the baby wipe.

I stamped randomly over the page with a crackle stamp and added the quote and the verse.  I found a Kraft envelope in my stash and stamped a heart on it.  I wrote my journaling on one side of the tag.

I stencilled on the pther side of the tag.
