Glimpses of Jesus 26

Glimpses of Jesus in the Old Testament is a year long bible study written by Simon Clay of Jubilee Church Solihull.   You can join in at any time.

Today's post is about the Good Shepherd as portrayed in Psalm 23.

I used one of the photos I took at Lake Erie in April and stuck the letters on.

Print & Dye

Last week I went on a Print & Dye workshop at Littleheath Barn.

I took along my Artfull-Attaché as inspiration for the colours I wanted to use.

In the morning we printed with dye mixed with manutex.

In the afternoon we dyed plain fabrics - although we could Shibori techniques if we wanted to.  However mine have come out quite pale so I haven't photographed them.

I also took some drawings to be made into Thermofax screens.  I traced the birds form my photos and then John made them into screens.  Here I've printed onto fabric.

I'm really rather excited about them!!!

Photo Scavenger Hunt

Rinda's Photo Scavenger Hunt started on June 1st.  However you can join in anytime.  Find out more on Rinda's blog.

I usually start quite late on but this year I decided I would get going.  You can find out how I did in 2015 and 2014.   Each year there's a different list.

This year's list:
1. A "wild heart" - a naturally occurring heart (like the rock above, but it doesn't have to be a rock)
2. A footprint or pawprint
3. A skeleton, bone or x-ray
4. A book or magazine read during 2016
5. A porch or deck
6. A camper (caravan)
7. A family gathering
8. A drawing, art project, artistic photograph, scrapbook page, greeting card, or art journal page created by you.
9. Someone playing with, in, or around water.
10. A bicycle

11. Fresh produce
12. A window
13. The moon
14. A buffet of food
15. A team logo
16. A map showing a trip taken during the time period
17. Twins
18. A supermarket cart, basket or trolley full of groceries
19. A seasonal cocktail or beverage
20. Someone laughing
21. A photograph of you with a newspaper or calendar page from the time period covered in the Hunt. Note: you may not use a substitute for this item.

Alternatives - if you're having trouble finding any of the above, you may substitute from this list (but you may not substitute for item #21):
alternative 1: a lighthouse
alternative 2: a baby (human or animal)

Here are my first photos
3. A skeleton, bone or x-ray

5. A porch or deck
A boat deck

A deck outside a cafe

Of course in the UK, porch means something different from in the US, so here is the porch at the front of my house.

10. A bicycle

12. A window
I saw this one

but then found this one

14. A buffet of food
It was rather dark in the hotel where I was having a buffet breakfast so I took a photo of the sign instead.

16. A map showing a trip taken during the time period
A map of the bus route when I visited York.

Number 13 on the list is The Moon and I had hoped to take a photo of the strawberry moon on Monday evening but sadly it was too cloudy.

Thanks for stopping by.

Glimpses of Jesus 25

Glimpses of Jesus in the Old Testament is a year long bible study written by Simon Clay of Jubilee Church Solihull.   You can join in at any time.

Today's post is about Psalm 22 in which the psalmist describes pain and suffering which foretells the death of Jesus.

I was really struggling to find how I was going to produce a journal page for this and was amazed to find Microsoft clipart images in Publisher that I could use.  I turned the image through 90 degrees and added the nail clipart and the words.

June Sketchbook challenge

I did a Sketchbook challenge in February which I managed to complete.  And I wrote about what I learned through the challenge.

I tried again with the April one but got distracted and so set about the June one with some hesitation.  The theme for June is Journey.

I decided I would use an exercise in Kim Thittichai's book Experimtental Textiles to get me started.  It's called The Journey and you draw with several thicknesses of brush and some black acrylic paint.

Day 1:  My picture is the journey of a river.

Then using L shaped cards to frame areas on the picture you trace sections.

Day 2:  Sections from the picture above

Day 3:  A couple of sections scanned into the computer and manipulated.

Day 4: A section traced with parts left out to make a different image

Day 5: Another section traced with parts left out to make a different image

Day 6: Yesterday's drawing enlarlged on the computer

Day 7: The same section drawn out in repeating patterns

Day 8: The image on the left taken and refdrawn to be a square image

Day 9: One of  the repeating patterns coloured in with Inktense crayons

Then I got sidetracked by the weekend at Art from the Heart that I told you about in this post.  And since then I have been painting the pages in another sketchbook.

On Saturday I visited a textile exhibition locally and saw a couple of ideas for other sketchbooks.  Watch this space!

Up North!

Last weekend I went to Yorkshire - known to the locals as God's Own Country.   I was going to a weekend class with Dyan Reaveley at Art from the Heart.  I decided that rather than sit in a traffic jam on the M1 on Friday afternoon I would drive up in the morning and visit York.   I left the car at a Park & Ride and took the bus into the city centre.

I have been to York before so I concentrated on visiting Fairfax House which I hadn't been to before but had seen on the television.

Unfortunately there was a ban on photography in the house but I did manage to sneak this one of the window on the main staircase.

I went for a boat trip on the river.

And saw about 50 or more geese going for a walk.

Then it was off to the hotel in Harrogate, dinner and the start of the workshop on Friday evening.    The workshop was called 'Expanding the Page' and was described as being 'Not for the faint hearted!'

At the start we were given one of Dyan's square journals and we were off - tearing pages out as a starter!  And then cutting a wavy line on several pages which produces this effect:
We didn't add the paint until the next day.

Over the weekend Dyan introduced us to old favourites and new techniques, showing us how she works when she starts a new journal.

We had a great time chatting, discussing, laughing, eating and oh yes - painting and spraying pages.  We also cut things out, pasted them in, and generally just played.  We weren't allowed to think about what each page might be.  The whole point was to have as many pages as possible having a background with random things stuck on so that whenever I want to journal I can just open up the book and journal.

On Monday and Tuesday I carried on with the pages - painting those I hadn't managed at the weekend, doodling and generally playing.

I took these two pages out because I wasn't very enamoured with them

And I stuck one or two pages in the journal together because I didn't like them at all.  I expect I could have gessoed over them but I didn't.

Here's a flip through my journal.

I bought another square journal and I hope to make another one using all the same techniques and principles but using other colours.

Glimpses of Jesus 24

Glimpses of Jesus in the Old Testament is a year long bible study written by Simon Clay of Jubilee Church Solihull.   You can join in at any time.

Today's post is about David's Psalm foreshadowing Christ's death and resurrection.  (Psalm 16)

I used a photograph I had taken of decaying stone in the Cathedral in St Albans earlier this year and added the words using Publisher.

Studio Day

The last time I worked on my Venice project was during a studio day at Ineke Berlyn's studio.   I wrote about the last time and here's an update.

It's such a privilege to be able to use Ineke's studio at Littleheath Barn.  Today Ineke's daughter Liske was in attendance as well so we had double the input.

Last time I had decided I was going to make a book with my fabric.

This time I decided I wanted to make each piece smaller and not make it into a book.  I cut the intended pages down to 7 inches square.

Then I chose bits of paper and fabric to glue down on the squares.

When the glue was dry I stamped and printed on top. They are now ready to stitch.

I managed to spread myself across a whole table big enough for 4 people to work at!

A fabulous day and I feel I achieved something.  Just need to keep up the momentum and stitch!

Glimpses of Jesus 23

Glimpses of Jesus in the Old Testament is a year long bible study written by Simon Clay of Jubilee Church Solihull.   You can join in at any time.

Today's post is about Jesus being described as King in Psalm 2:1-12.

Still keeping my journal pages simple, I stuck in part of a world map which was from my scrapbooking stash.  I stamped 'ask me for the nations' with a new set of stamps I bought from Tiger at the weekend.

Almost finished or possibly not!

In my post I've been a bit busy! I showed you the start of my pages in my Art-full Attaché.  I have continued to work on it and I can now reveal two thirds of the Attaché journal.

This journal is not a prerequisite of the Finding Sanctuary workshop but I know that if I just take lots of photos, bits of paper with quotes on and other stuff on the supply list with me, I will waste a considerable part of the 3 days trying to make up my mind what I am doing.  This journal will hopefully pin my ideas down a bit more.

The cover with the handles showing

The front page

I've added quotes since you saw this page last

I used a paper napkin on this page and the one above

More pages

On the right is a plastic pocket to put bits and pieces in.  I collected feathers from the beach so I may put those in there or the spare photos that I have.

The third signature in my Attaché journal is about the inside of my friend's house so I won't be sharing most of those photos and pages here.

I am hoping that when I am on the Finding Sanctuary course I will be able to add to this journal.  I know that Hilary will talk to us about making our own stamps and I envisage making some using the bird outlines.  I shall then stamp them on the pages of my journal.

Thanks for stopping by.
