50 ways to leave your layer

Warning: there are a lot (and I mean a lot!) of photos in this post.

Last weekend I went to Art from the Heart in Harrogate for a weekend of two workshops led by Seth Apter.

The workshop on Saturday was '50 ways to leave your layer'.  We were given a Dylusions square journal and did one technique for each double page.  Some technique pages had more than one layer!

Smooshing - a type of monoprinting

Smooshing with others!   This works so much better with the black background rather than the white above.

Printing with texture

Splatter

Hidden background

Subtraction stencilling

Water splats!

Brayered

Two colours

Ombre

Free choice of techniques to do the cover.

On Sunday we did 'Mixed Media Mashup'.  We made one finished piece to take home using a variety of techniques following Seth's instructions.

My piece went from this first layer:

to this:

And in between were these layers:

Die cuts using Seth's Spellbinder Dies.

Auditioning the pieces

Improvements after advice from Seth

Added finishing touches

It was a fabulous full on weekend.  Thank you Seth.  Thanks to Art from the Heart for organising it and to my friend Carolyn who joined me for the weekend.

Well done if you've got this far.  I did warn you there were a lot of photos.

Thanks for stopping by.

Day 30 My Attitude of Gratitude Journal

If you want to join in with making an Attitude of Gratitude Journal through the month of November click through to the Challenge blog.

Here on this blog I am going to share how I made the page for today's prompt on Gratitude.

Today's art challenge was to 'use Dyan's Shadow Stamping technique on your page today'.

I just love Dyan's shadow stamping technique and it's so easy to do.  I sprayed lemon, orange and chocolate inks onto manila card in exactly the way Dyan describes in the video.  Then I inked the stamp and followed her instructions again.

Here's a close up.

I highlighted the leaves with a white pen.  I randomly stamped with the alphabet stamp and then stamped the quote, the dragonflies and added the verse.

And then I journaled around the quote.

I  cannot believe that we have come to the end of the 30 days of prompts.  I hope that you have enjoyed our time together both here and on the Challenge Blog.

Come back tomorrow to find out how I have put all the pages together into a journal.

Don't throw anything away until you have seen tomorrow's post!!!

Day 26 My Attitude of Gratitude Journal

If you want to join in with making an Attitude of Gratitude Journal through the month of November click through to the Challenge blog.

Here on this blog I am going to share how I made the page for today's prompt on Dreams.

Today's art challenge was to 'make your own washi tape to use on your page today'.

I thought I would try making my version of washi tape using surgical tape.  I stuck some down on my glass plate and stamped on it.  I sprayed some in on it but it seeped underneath and I was concerned it might stop it being sticky so I used Distress Ink instead.

Then I went a bit berserk with a star stencil and the Fall Seasonal Distress Inks.

And then I added some glimmer mist!!!

One of the joys of having the glass plate was that I could put the tape over the top of the page to see if it would work!

Which is when I decided it didn't and added some acrylic paint to it using my fingers.  I added it to the page but wasn't particularly impressed with it.

So I made some more tape using just Archival Ink.

I put the new tape over the old tape.  Sprayed the cut up verse and stuck it on.

I highlighted some of the stars, doodled along the sides of the tape and journaled between the cut up verse.

I think it's still too busy a background for me and would probably have started again except I'd already done the other side of the page.  I suppose I could have covered it with gesso or sprayed more ink over it.

Still there it is.  A very starry page.

I hope you have a better day.  See you tomorrow.

Day 18 My Attitude of Gratitude Journal

If you want to join in with making an Attitude of Gratitude Journal through the month of November click through to the Challenge blog.

Here on this blog I am going to share how I made the page for today's prompt on Memories.

Today's art challenge was to 'use packaging in a creative way on your page today'.

This page is the mop up of acrylic paint that I showed you on November 11th.

I used different colours of ink on bubble wrap and printed over the paint.

I also found some lovely packaging that I'd kept from something I bought - can't remember what now.  I had kept it as I thought it might be useful as a journal card.

Hiwever, I decided to punch out 3 different types of butterfly instead.  I stuck these on and the verse.

I used a glaze pen to outline the butterflies and to do my journaling.

I'm quite fond of this page.  But then I've always liked orange and turquoise together.

What colours will you use on your page today?

Day 6 My Attitude of Gratitude Journal

If you want to join in with making an Attitude of Gratitude Journal through the month of November click through to the Challenge blog.

Here on this blog I am going to share how I made the page for today's prompt on Technology.

Today's art challenge was to 'use Dyan's Ghosting Technique'.

I started with the piece I had blotted on yesterday with the manila card. Then I sprayed it all over with the Squeezed Orange.

I followed Dyan's instructions spraying water through stencils.

I used Archival Ink and stamped all around the outside edges of the page so that not all of the stamp was on the page.  I also used the diamonds stamps from the Basic Backgrounds set very lightly. I cleaned the ink of the stamps by stamping onto the large sheet of paper behind my page.

I added some highlight using white and black acrylic paint.  I did the circles with the top from a glue stick and the lines with an old credit card. Then I stuck on the Bible Verse.

I added my journaling around the circles and into a spiral. (sorry you can't see it very well).  I added white dots to show where the journaling was.

I hope you are enjoying the challenges so far.  Don't worry if you're not keeping up every day as the challenges will be available for quite a while.

It's amazing to think we are already a fifth of the way through the month.

Day 4 My Attitude of Gratitude Journal

If you want to join in with making an Attitude of Gratitude Journal through the month of November click through to the Challenge blog.

Here on this blog I am going to share how I made the page for today's prompt on Time.

Today's art challenge was to 'stamp with an embossing folder'.

I decided that I would use the page that I had already used as a mop up from a previous day.  As the theme for today is Time I thought I would use my Tim Holtz Sizzix Texture Fades.  This didn't work as well as the Patchwork one I have used in the past.

I inked the raised side of the embossing folder with Archival Ink and pressed it down onto the page.

If you don't want the line of the embossing folder to show on the page then mask off the rest of the page with some spare paper.

Then I stamped with various stamps and black Archival Ink.

I added the Bible Verse and my journaling. I added one or two highlights with black pen.

I haven't listed the stamps I used as I want to encourage you to use whatever you have and interpret the theme and the challenge in your own way.

I hope this has been helpful and look forward to seeing your interpretation.
