Seth Apter

I love going to workshops taught by Seth Apter.  This one was local at Amelia's Creative Crafts - only 25 minutes from home.

The first activity was done on a 6 inch square of Canson board.  The first layer was washi tape.

Then there was stamping and inking.

We used various of Seth's Baked Velvets Embossing Powders and the original Baked Texture Embossing Powders.

The second activity starting with collaging an A4 piece of paper.

And after various techniques we covered the piece with 3 layers of Baked Texture: Vintage Beeswax.

The third activity used two colours of acrylic paint on an A4  Canson board.

Then we got to use the new Embossing Powder - Baked Texture: Blizzard.  We sponged the Embossing Ink through stencils.

I liked the result of the second activity best.

The products can be used on fabric so at some point I will be experimenting with that.

A return to the Book of Moments

Last week I told you about the Seth Apter workshops I went on.   So often I go to workshops and don't finish the project so this time I determined that I would finish the book.

I think the pages may need some scribble and splatter but that can be done anytime.  Or maybe even add some more elements to some of the pages.  But for now I shall consider it done.

Seth Apter Workshops

I'm interrupting my armchair travel guide to New Zealand & Australia to share the workshops that I did last weekend at Art from the Heart with Seth Apter.

On Saturday Seth presented 'The Book of Moments'.  He showed us an easy way to bind two book covers together.

And then we made the pages.  I'm really pleased with how much I got done in one day.   I love Seth's teaching style - structured technique in the morning and supervised play in the afternoon.

I have the backs of all these pages to collage and one more doublesided page to make.  I am thinking of using 3 tags instead for the missing page.

Sunday brought us 'Cutting Room Floor' where we altered photos and then made a background and collaged one of the photos.

I took these two photos with me amongst others and below you can see how I worked into them and colourized them.

This one was a black and white version of the photo above.

I didn't change very much of this one.

For the afternoon's collage, I painted the background

I looked through the collage elements I had taken with me and came up with this layout.

It didn't look quite the same when I had stuck it down but that doesn't matter.  I added some finishing touches.

ExTex: Penultimate Post

I hadn't realised it was such a long time since I have written about ExTex.  The last time was Session 4 and next week is the final session - Session 9.

Session 5 was about experimenting with weaving, knitting, needlefelting and wet felting.

The homework was to use one (or more) of these techniques to produce a 3D something.  I made this wet felted vase.

At Session 6 we used Transfer Paints.  I really wasn't enamoured with these but I'm quite pleased with this homework that used the dyed fabric and felt.

Session 7 was a mix of things.  Firstly we dyed fabrics.  At home after I had washed and dried the fabrics I made this colour wheel.

I also tried out the different colours on a dyed background with coloured stitching in the hope it would show how colours react with one another.

We also played with Tyvek and Lutradur.

At our penultimate session we played with Kim's technique of 'Backgrounds & Pretties' made with dyed or painted newspaper.  I backed one of my 'pretties' with painted Lutradur.

And we made beads with different synthetic materials including cellophane and crisp packets.

I've spent the time since trying to complete all the rest of the samples I need for my workbook and which maybe chosen for the exhibition at the NEC in a couple of weeks.

This sample is made from a baby wipe that I had used to clean one of the stamps I made.  It is stitched on to some fabric I had painted on a different course and some bits of painted Tyvek was added.

At session 8 Kim talked about different ways to raise the surface on a piece of work.  I stamped a piece of Lutradur with modeling paste using one of the stamps I made.  Then I painted it with Seth Apter Paper Artsy paints.  I also used some copper paint.  I stitched into it with seed stitch.

After the NEC show I'll share some photos of the exhibition and my finished piece which is still in the making and I have only 5 days left to finish it!!!!

50 ways to leave your layer

Warning: there are a lot (and I mean a lot!) of photos in this post.

Last weekend I went to Art from the Heart in Harrogate for a weekend of two workshops led by Seth Apter.

The workshop on Saturday was '50 ways to leave your layer'.  We were given a Dylusions square journal and did one technique for each double page.  Some technique pages had more than one layer!

On Sunday we did 'Mixed Media Mashup'.  We made one finished piece to take home using a variety of techniques following Seth's instructions.
