Today's post is about the birth of Isaac in Genesis 18.

I made a very simple journal page for this.

I printed out the ultrasound scan of my grandson on ordinary printer paper and glued it to the journal page.  I put white gesso on the rest of the page and over the edge of the torn photo.  When that was dry I painted the gesso with grey paint.  Then I used sticker letters which I drew round with a pen.

Venice project

Regular readers may remember that at the end of 2015 I started a sketchbook project on Venice.  I wrote several blog posts including one about a zigzag book inspired by Michelle Ward plus how I used the sketchbook inspiration in the Cas Holmes weekend I went to.

Last Friday I went to Ineke Berlyn's studio where we can work on our own projects and she comes round and encourages each of us and makes suggestions about how to extend the work.

I started with the piece of fabric I had printed at her studio on a previous visit.  I can't believe that was last March.

I used stencils, thermofax screens and fabric paint to add more pattern to the fabric.  When I showed Ineke two of the pieces I made at the Cas Holmes workshop she suggested that I could make a book using these as pages.

I tore the fabric I had printed into page size pieces

And started laying pieces of paper and fabric on top

As I was printing the fabric I also printed into my sketchbook so now I have more pages to work into in the sketchbook as well as the fabric pages.

The image on the right is a scan of the original drawing and the page on the left is the print I took from the original watercolour.

Telling my story

I am doing a class with Jeanne Oliver called Reflections: Paint your story.  You can join in if you wish.

One of the exercises was to cut out words and phrases from magazines that stood out to you and make them into a poem.  I painted the background first then stuck the words on.

In another exercise we were asked to collect together lots of photographs of our lives plus bits and pieces about things we like and create a storyboard.

I used the back of the dining room door to put this together.  I had a lot more photos than this to choose from but they didn't make it to the door.  Plus there are thousands of other photos that I didn't even look through.

When it was finished I looked at it and realised vast swathes of my life are missing from the storyboard.  There's nothing up there about my education or my working life.   So what is there?  Some family and various elements of my creativity - art, textiles and photography.

The photos didn't last long on the back of the door - some of them were pulling other ones off so I took them down and put them into the groups they seemed to belong to.

It is very interesting to me to look at these photos and ponder on why I chose them and what they represent.  And how much was left out and why.

And then from this storyboard I painted a timeline picture.  If you want more details on how I did that you will need to sign up for the Jeanne Oliver class.
